Addiction can be debilitating for both men and women. However, men often encounter different problems when facing addiction. Men and women have unique responses to substance use and often face different physical, social, and psychological obstacles while recovering. Gender-specific programming allows recovery to be tailored to men’s individual needs and perspectives.
At Spero Recovery Center we provide drug and alcohol treatment services using the principles of the 12-step program. If you’re searching for addiction treatment in Colorado, call our treatment team today and let us help you find the best program for you!
The Spero Recovery Difference
At Spero Recovery Center, we teach men how to recover in real-time with support and counseling. We teach our clients how to be honest with one another and how to hold each other accountable. Members from our local recovery community offer counseling sessions to show our clients how to recover in the outside world.
Our unique approach allows our clients to develop a connection with each other. When our clients feel like they are getting something done as a team, instead of just being told what to do, they feel a sense of ownership. By doing this, we set the men in our program up for long-term recovery.
The community vibe we foster at Spero Recovery enables our clients to feel comfortable and teaches them interpersonal skills. We want to create a safe environment for our clients; our goal is to provide a space where they can become the people they have always wanted to be.
At Spero Recovery, we immerse our clients into a 12 Step community. They find sponsors, meet up with them regularly, and work through the 12 Steps. Members of the community pass down the gift of recovery to our clients, which allows them to begin the process of recovery and eventually pass on the gift to other clients.
We also offer experiential programming – hikes and other outdoor activities. We also have a full woodworking shop. Inviting specialists onto the premises—such as meditation teachers and chefs—is one of our favorite things to do. Our goal is to teach our clients essential life skills and the importance of building relationships.
There’s Hope with Spero Recovery!
Spero Recovery Center’s Residential Treatment Program
At Spero Recovery Center, we offer a residential treatment program for men. Clients stay onsite for a minimum of 30 days and have the option to stay up to 90 days. Our clients work through the 12 Steps during a residential stay and are immersed in a recovery community. Our center is located in the woods with nice homes and high-quality appliances. Our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality care.
Upon completion of our residential programming at Spero Recovery, our clients emerge equipped with a comprehensive understanding of the 12-Step program, coupled with a steadfast sense of accountability and a sponsor to support them throughout the rest of their recovery journey. An integral milestone in their recovery journey, the ninth step of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a pivotal focus during this phase. The ninth step involves making amends to those harmed during one’s addiction, fostering personal growth and reconciliation.
Substance Abuse Treatment
Using 12-step programming, we provide substance abuse treatment for many substance use disorders, including alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, meth, and prescription drug use. Our clinical director has over two decades of experience with various treatment modalities. With clinical oversight, men are given the opportunity to evaluate past behaviors, repair relationships, and begin a life free from substances.
Our supportive environment and programming treat clients as a whole person rather than treating symptoms of addiction. At Spero Recovery Center, men will have the opportunity to participate in group meetings, experiential therapies, and in the community. The 12 steps- well known for helping to treat alcoholism-guides our residents to long-lasting sobriety.
Mental Health Treatment
At Spero Recovery Center we can help clients with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. This means that men with substance use disorders that co-occur with mental health challenges can receive support in our program. Anxiety and depression, for example, are common mental illnesses to exist at the same time as a substance use disorder. It’s important to treat a coexisting mental illness and substance use disorder concurrently because a mental health concern can be one of the underlying causes of addiction.
In Spero Recovery Center’s residential program for men, clients participate in group therapy and wilderness therapy to help manage and overcome symptoms of mental health disorders. Upon request, clients can have access to different therapeutic approaches. If someone requests or needs therapy, they will be connected with a therapist. Our program does not have therapists, but we can connect men with offsite therapists to accommodate their needs.
4-week rotating Curriculum that includes discussions about the 3 part disease, fully conceding, powerlessness and unmanageability, and personal questions relating to step 1

Rotating through all 12 traditions (Generally 3 a week to do all in 4 weeks) and using them to look at how each of us is showing up in each of our relationships
We use this Group time to present graduation certificates, for guys to pass around their big books for numbers and words of encouragement, and for each person to address the graduate with words of encouragement and constructive criticism. When there are no graduations we use this time for some brotherhood activity.
Staff or clients bring some topics to the group, which have relevance to things going on in the house or someone’s personal sobriety. Those topics are discussed and the group uses the big book and personal experience to find suggestions and solutions
Clients and staff get together during this time to do an activity from a large list that is chosen by the group, or if there are enough staff or volunteers can split into multiple groups to do the chosen activities. These include hikes, cornhole, volleyball, cards, recovery movie, a variety of competitive tournaments, crafts, etc.

Gender-specific treatment is beneficial to the recovery process. In our residential treatment program for men, clients work on recovery with peers and get to focus on issues that may affect them based on gender. Our goal at Spero Recovery is to break the ideas associated with “being a man” that have become ingrained in our heads. Men often hear phrases such as:
“Man up.”
“Tough it out.”
“Boys don’t cry.”
“Be a man.”
As a society, we teach our men that talking about their emotions and feelings is a sign of weakness. Just because men are told to hide their feelings doesn’t mean they don’t have any. Men who experience sadness or grief are more likely to channel their feelings into different emotions that are seen as more socially acceptable, such as anger or laughter. When men are told to hide their emotions, those feelings have to go somewhere. This stigma may be the reason men turn to substance use, continuing to suppress what they genuinely feel. At Spero Recovery Center, we want to get to the core of why men drink alcohol or use drugs and help them build a strong foundation of accountability and community where they’ll feel safe.
Overcoming Barriers to Treatment
The way men are taught to deal with emotions may also cause fear of asking for help, especially financially. At Spero Recovery Center, our mission is to provide accessible, high-quality care. Spero was created to give hope to an underserved community who are uninsured or unable to pay for addiction treatment. That’s why we offer our residential treatment at a low cost and accept cash-only pay. Call our admissions to learn more.
Spero Recovery teaches men that they can have a more diverse range of emotions. We want to redefine what a man is. Spero Recovery believes in creating sophisticated but rugged men. Our clients are taught that it’s okay to feel intimacy, compassion, and vulnerability. Through our individual approach, our clients can exhibit a range of emotions with other men in recovery.
